FAQs

Below is a list of frequently asked questions and the answers to them.

Q
Who decides who can apply?
A

Shell LiveWIRE Country Programme Managers invite the best and most innovative LiveWIRE businesses from their country that fit the eligibility criteria of Top Ten Innovators, to make an application.

If your business has been invited to apply it means that you have been personally selected by a Shell LiveWIRE Programme Manager who believes that your business is worthy, and can benefit from this initiative.

Q
What are the Eligibility Criteria for Top Ten Innovators?
A

Applicants must be a past Shell LiveWIRE business, have been registered at least 12 months but not more than five years, and have growth potential.

Q
What does Innovation mean?
A

Innovation is all about change – the act of making changes in your business via the introduction of new products (or improvements to existing ones), services, methods or processes.   These changes will make a significant positive difference, and that difference should be measurable in some way (e.g. an increase in jobs, turnover or customers; savings in time, cost or resource).  Real innovation will lead to sustainability, and growth.

Q
How much are the Awards?
A

There are 3 main award categories: Energy Solutions; Retail Supply Chain; and, Social Enterprises.

In each category there will be one Winner who will receive US $20,000. There will also be two Runners-Up in each category who will each receive US $10,000.

In addition, an Outstanding Achievement Award Winner will be selected from the 21 shortlisted businesses, to receive US $10,000.

Q
How many countries have Shell LiveWIRE programmes?
A

Shell LiveWIRE is currently active in 17 countries: Argentina; Brazil; Brunei; Egypt; France; Indonesia; Italy; Kazakhstan; Kuwait; Malaysia; Nigeria; Oman; Pakistan; Saudi Arabia; South Africa; Trinidad & Tobago; UK; with two affiliated programmes in the Netherlands (New Energy Challenge) and in Singapore (Shell #IdeaRefinery).

Q
Why is Shell supporting Top Ten Innovators?
A

Innovation is a recognised tool to increase the sustainability, survivability and success of any business; the Shell LiveWIRE ‘Top Ten Innovators’ initiative will highlight and reward LiveWIRE businesses that demonstrate excellence in innovation.

Enterprise development is one of Shell’s global Social Investment themes, which is why LiveWIRE programmes work hard to help young entrepreneurs turn bright ideas into a long-term source of income.  The Shell LiveWIRE programme was established 36 years ago, and Shell is proud to have supported innovative young entrepreneurs, like the ones highlighted on this website, for so long.

Q
What are the requirements for my Video?
A

The video must be no longer than 90 seconds (we cannot accept longer videos, and anything over 90 seconds will be cut), and it should be filmed in (landscape) 16:9 video format.

Videos in languages other than English are acceptable but please include English subtitles, so that we can meet accessibility guidelines.

You can engage with the global Shell LiveWIRE community by using the hashtag #TopTenInnovators and tagging @LiveWIREIntl in posts on Twitter.

Q
How can I increase my chances of receiving an award?
A

Applicants that reach the public vote are encouraged to share the news via social media using the Top Ten Innovators public vote page link, to promote the fact that they have been invited to apply for a Top Ten Innovators Award, and encourage their supporters to vote for them.

Q
If my application is successful, can I publicise information about my success?
A

Your Shell LiveWIRE Programme Manager will liaise with you to agree a PR statement relating to your successful application in order to publicise details of your success and the support provided to you from Shell LiveWIRE.  Please do not issue any communications on your Top Ten Innovators application until you have agreed the messaging and timings with your LiveWIRE Programme Manager.

Q
Who will judge my application?
A

An international panel will judge the highest ranked applications from the assessment and public vote; judges are interested in the business’ achievements, and demonstration of implementing innovation in the three categories. The judging panel will be announced and publicised on the Top Ten Innovators website.

Q
What sort of Innovation are the Judges looking for?

The judges will be interested in the innovations that applicants have introduced, and the achievements the innovations have enabled. Judges will also assess the impact and potential of the innovation in the relevant award category.

Q
What happens if my application is successful and I win a Top Ten Innovators Award?
A

Following your receipt of the Award, you will be contacted by Shell LiveWIRE International who will keep in touch with you to monitor your progress and success for a period of 12 months. It is a condition of the Top Ten Innovators grant to provide Shell LiveWIRE International with the information they ask for to demonstrate the impact that the funding has made to your business.
